Consultation on tobacco plain packaging by end of the year
The government is to begin a wide-ranging consultation on plain packaging of tobacco products by the end of the year, informed by the legal challenges Australia has faced as the first nation to pass such legislation.
Australia’s parliament approved laws last month to introduce plain packaging from December 2012 to reduce the attraction of smoking, but three tobacco giants have launched lawsuits saying the laws infringe trademark rights.
Under the legislation, cigarette, pipe tobacco and cigars will have to be sold in branding-free olive green packs displaying the product name in a plain typeface along with graphic health warnings. Governments in Europe, Canada and New Zealand will be watching closely.
In March, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley announced plans to start considering a move towards plain packaging under a new tobacco control plan, but he gave no timescale.
“The tobacco control plan confirms a commitment to consult by the end of this year on options to reduce the promotional impact of tobacco packaging, including an option to require plain packaging,” said a Department of Health spokeswoman on Tuesday.
She added that the department was looking for expert legal advice on all aspects of a possible move, including the intellectual property right implications before it publishes a consultation document that would look at the costs as well as the additional public health benefits of policy options.

For all the talk about how bad the sovereign debt crisis in Europe is, you'd think that the euro would be completely tanking against most other currencies. But as the chart at the top of this page shows, it's not the case.

No arrests have been made. Police were still investigating the case Thursday that has entangled Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson, a North Carolina native in his fourth NFL season. A package containing 2 pounds of marijuana was tracked to Simpson's home.
The case is being investigated by police at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, along with local authorities.
A Bengals spokesman said the club was aware of the reports but had no comment. Calls to Simpson's agent went unreturned. Simpson was excused from practice on Thursday to deal with the matter. It was unclear whether he would be available for a game Sunday against San Francisco at Paul Brown Stadium.
Simpson was at his home along with girlfriend and teammate Anthony Collins on Tuesday when the woman accepted the package, said Michelle Gregory, a spokeswoman with the California Department of Justice.
Collins' agent didn't return a call seeking comment. Collins practiced on Thursday but didn't make himself available to reporters for comment. Coach Marvin Lewis said Collins wasn't a focus of the investigation,Nfl bears jersreys cheap though he declined further comment.

Lee Roy Selmon, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Hall of Fame defensive end who teamed with his brothers to create a dominant defensive front and helped lead Oklahoma to consecutive national championships, died Sunday — two days after being hospitalized for a stroke. He was 56.
A statement released on behalf of his wife, Claybra Selmon, said he died at a Tampa hospital surrounded by family members.
"For all his accomplishments on and off the field, to us Lee Roy was the rock of our family. This has been a sudden and shocking event and we are devastated by this unexpected loss," the statement said.
Selmon was hospitalized Friday,digital video recorders and the Buccaneers confirmed later that he suffered a stroke.
"The guy just worked as hard as you could ever work and was just a great guy," said former Tampa Bay teammate Bill Kollar, now the Houston Texans' assistant head coach and defensive line coach.
"Never got mad, was just always great to everybody and it's hard to imagine that you could end up being a better person than Lee Roy was. Really, the guy was just an phenomenal person. ... It's obviously really a sad day. The guy was a great player and even a better person. It's just a shame that this happened to him."

It is something that I just had to put in place I'm afraid. There have been people driving up the driveway and stuff which isn't very nice. It's tough but it is just the world we live in unfortunately. If you're in the position we're in you're so public."
Life has changed for McIlroy since he won the US Open in record style. If his profile was raised dramatically in America then in his homeland the roof blew off. Where once Holywood, the Belfast suburb he has lived in all his life, had been his sanctuary, now it became a goldfish bowl. No escape, little privacy.
"It's definitely a lot tougher than it was three months ago," said McIlroy. "There are moments when you think, 'what's happening here, what's going on?' But this is always what I wanted to do. When you grow up and dream of being a professional golfer and dream of winning majors, all you really think about is the golf and playing in front of great crowds on unbelievable courses, winning trophies. You never think about the other side of it and that is the side that takes a bit of getting used to. It is also something that you don't really expect."

Brisbane prop Ben Hannant will miss Darren Lockyer's big night against North Queensland in Townsville, with scans confirming a small tear in his hip flexor.
Hannant is facing a minimum of three weeks on the sidelines.

The father, Li Longwang, 19, and Li Ying, 18, from Hunan Province said they didn't want their three-year-old son, two-year-old daughter and newly born baby boy back even after police found them at their new families, according to a report on Hunan's news portal, Rednet.cn, yesterday.
"Please don't send them back.,hair weave, We don't want them," the couple reportedly told police in Hunan's Jiangyong County when they were questioned in the detention center.
The report said the couple appeared not to be worried about their detention but, smiling, just asked: "When can we get out?"

China's news agency, which has been expanding its presence in the United States and recently moved its offices to a Times Square office building, is going a step further by leasing ad space in one of the area's most well-known locations.
A sign for Xinhua is scheduled to light up at 2 Times Square on Aug. 1. The 60-foot by 40-foot sign will take its place in a vertical column of lighted ads from companies including Prudential, Samsung, Coca-Cola and Hyundai.
The building, on the northern end of Times Square, is one of the most photographed in the area, said Jeffrey Katz, CEO of Sherwood Equities, which owns it.
"You find the image of this building everywhere once you start looking," he said Tuesday.
Xinhua is taking space formerly used by HSBC.nfl throwback jerseys from china Katz declined to say how long the lease for the spot is, or how much it costs, but said that leases for those spaces are generally for several years. HSBC had been using the spot for 10 years. "I realized I had to take responsibility for the things I do in or out of the pool I was hurting myself. That's what I learnt after a low time the last two years," Phelps told a packed press conference on Saturday.
"If I want to accomplish my goals, I have to take charge of myself. I have to do it myself although (coach) Bob (Bowman) has pushed me every day. I can't be lazy any more and actually should do something.Video capture cards
"It's been a good experience over the past six months (to go through the highs and lows). It's a learning process. Hopefully, I can use it as a motivation for London," said Phelps, who will only swim four individual events in Shanghai.

ILO official praises Hu's commitment to social welfare
BEIJING - A senior official with the International Labour Organization (ILO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, spoke highly of Chinese President Hu Jintao's pledge to promote employment and social security for all citizens.

Commenting on this, Herbert said additional measures are needed to ensure Chinese workers enjoy a fair share of the country's booming economy.
Wage bargaining between workers and employers, more training and retraining opportunities for workers to help sustain productivity improvements, innovation in human resources management to encourage collaboration, consultation and dialogue with workers will all help to close the gap, she added.
Herbert said her organization has been cooperating with Chinese partners in promoting equal opportunities and treatment in employment, strengthening labor inspection services, building sound labor relations and improving employment services and workers' access to social services.
Following the ILO Global Campaign on Social Security and Coverage for All, China has made remarkable progress in extending the social insurance system from urban to rural areas, she said.
Herbert said although China has made great progress in protecting workers' legitimate rights, discrimination based on gender, age and social origin still exists in the labor market.
"For example,,5816 Style Women Boots, migrant workers still face unequal treatment in employment and access to social services in spite of concerted efforts by the government and social partners," Herbert said. "Ensuring equal pay for work of equal value remains a challenge as well."
She also pointed out that many preventable workplace accidents happen every year in China and more attention should be paid to reducing the incidence of occupational diseases.
"Much remains to be done to strengthen work safety, to develop a preventive safety culture at work and to enhance occupational safety and health administration and inspection," she said.
As labor disputes continue to rise, Herbert suggested that sound labor relations through which workers' rights are protected, working conditions improved and mechanisms put in place to prevent and resolve disputes are the key to more harmonious social development.
"I am confident that China has both the vision and the capacity to address these issues, and I expect to see great progress in the coming years," she said.

The trio keeps it simple in the studio

The trio keeps it simple in the studio, as evidenced by its two albums—last year's self-titled disc, and 2009's "Only Way to Be Alone"—both on the Sargent House label. "We won't record anything that we can't play live," Mr. Schwartz said.
Topped by flawless vocal harmonies, the trio's breezy, spirited music is a throwback to the best folk rock of the late 1960s and early '70s. One can hear in their sound a bit of Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills and Nash—especially the songs featuring Graham Nash, who recently called the band to express his admiration. Good Old War seems a natural for Deadheads and jam-band fans who favor the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" period. It's no surprise to learn the trio cut its teeth by performing songs by the Beatles, the Everly Brothers, Paul Simon, the Traveling Wilburys and other pop acts that featured vocal harmonies.
"We were making acoustic pop songs," Mr. Goodwin said, remembering their days playing Philadelphia-area bars. "When we decided to do our own music, we said: 'Let's make good songs that can stand alone with just acoustic guitars and vocals.'" The voices seem to blend naturally. "At this point, it's memory," he added. "Even if we can't hear ourselves on stage, we can still sound good."

16 Suspected 'Anonymous' Hackers Arrested in Nationwide Sweep
Sixteen suspected members of "Anonymous" were arrested this morning in states across the country, from California to New York, in a federal raid on the notorious hacking group.
The arrests Tuesday, first reported by FoxNews.com, are part of an ongoing investigation into Anonymous, which has claimed responsibility for numerous cyberattacks against a variety of websites, including Visa and Mastercard.
The Department of Justice, in announcing the arrests and more than 35 search warrants in the case, said the case stemmed from an alleged cyberattack on the website PayPal over its action against controversial group WikiLeaks, one of the inspirations for the hacker group Anonymous.
Fourteen of the arrests were identified in the same indictment out of California, while two separate criminal complaints filed out of courts in Newark, N.J., and Tampa, Fla., name the two other alleged hackers. All are believed to have been involved in carrying out nationwide coordinated distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on multiple high-profile, billion-dollar companies.
"In retribution for PayPal’s termination of WikiLeaks’ donation account, a group calling itself Anonymous coordinated and executed distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against PayPal’s computer servers using an open source computer program the group makes available for free download on the Internet," the Justice Department said in a news release.

"He was much larger than expected," said Kirk, explaining how JaMichael was the biggest baby he had ever delivered. "Both his mother and father are large people, and she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which contributed to the baby's size."

"I'm just excited that he's here," said Johnson.
Johnson delivered her baby a week early. Kirk said delivery wasn't induced before that because the staff needed to wait for JaMichael's lungs to fully mature.
"While infants of diabetic mothers are large in size, their organ function is not more developed," said Dr. Manuel Porto, a professor and chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at University of California at Irvine. "In fact, their lung development may be delayed. Early delivery can lead to respiratory problems for the newborn."
