China's news agency leases Times Square ad space
China's news agency, which has been expanding its presence in the United States and recently moved its offices to a Times Square office building, is going a step further by leasing ad space in one of the area's most well-known locations.
A sign for Xinhua is scheduled to light up at 2 Times Square on Aug. 1. The 60-foot by 40-foot sign will take its place in a vertical column of lighted ads from companies including Prudential, Samsung, Coca-Cola and Hyundai.
The building, on the northern end of Times Square, is one of the most photographed in the area, said Jeffrey Katz, CEO of Sherwood Equities, which owns it.
"You find the image of this building everywhere once you start looking," he said Tuesday.
Xinhua is taking space formerly used by HSBC.nfl throwback jerseys from china Katz declined to say how long the lease for the spot is, or how much it costs, but said that leases for those spaces are generally for several years. HSBC had been using the spot for 10 years. He also said the space generally wouldn't go to a company that competes with a firm that is already there, so for example, Coca-Cola being in the column would preclude another soft drink company from being able to lease a spot.
Xinhua did not respond to phone calls and emails seeking comment. The news agency has had a presence in the United States for decades, but has been taking more high-profile steps recently. It moved its headquarters this year from Queens to 1540 Broadway and last year started a 24-hour English-language broadcast.
While there have been instances of Chinese companies taking ad space in the area before, Katz said, the Xinhua sign is the first major-impact ad to go up.
"They're coming here to be a major presence in this country in terms of news," he said.NFL jerseys wholesale from China
