McIlroy 'I've had security at my house every night since the US Open'

McIlroy 'I've had security at my house every night since the US Open'

Rory McIlroy appeared on an American breakfast show yesterday to confirm to an ecstatic audience that he would be taking up his US Tour membership next year and will be buying property in the States.

But what remained unsaid was one of the unsettling factors for the switch. Northern Ireland's adoration for their favourite son has proved all too claustrophobic.

"It is part of the reason, yes," said the 22-year-old. "I have had security guards at my house every night since I won the US Open patrolling around the area. It is something that I just had to put in place I'm afraid. There have been people driving up the driveway and stuff which isn't very nice. It's tough but it is just the world we live in unfortunately. If you're in the position we're in you're so public."

Life has changed for McIlroy since he won the US Open in record style. If his profile was raised dramatically in America then in his homeland the roof blew off. Where once Holywood, the Belfast suburb he has lived in all his life, had been his sanctuary, now it became a goldfish bowl. No escape, little privacy.

"It's definitely a lot tougher than it was three months ago," said McIlroy. "There are moments when you think, 'what's happening here, what's going on?' But this is always what I wanted to do. When you grow up and dream of being a professional golfer and dream of winning majors, all you really think about is the golf and playing in front of great crowds on unbelievable courses, winning trophies. You never think about the other side of it and that is the side that takes a bit of getting used to. It is also something that you don't really expect."

China's news agency leases Times Square ad space

China's news agency leases Times Square ad space

China's news agency, which has been expanding its presence in the United States and recently moved its offices to a Times Square office building, is going a step further by leasing ad space in one of the area's most well-known locations.

A sign for Xinhua is scheduled to light up at 2 Times Square on Aug. 1. The 60-foot by 40-foot sign will take its place in a vertical column of lighted ads from companies including Prudential, Samsung, Coca-Cola and Hyundai.

The building, on the northern end of Times Square, is one of the most photographed in the area, said Jeffrey Katz, CEO of Sherwood Equities, which owns it.

"You find the image of this building everywhere once you start looking," he said Tuesday.

Xinhua is taking space formerly used by HSBC.nfl throwback jerseys from china Katz declined to say how long the lease for the spot is, or how much it costs, but said that leases for those spaces are generally for several years. HSBC had been using the spot for 10 years. He also said the space generally wouldn't go to a company that competes with a firm that is already there, so for example, Coca-Cola being in the column would preclude another soft drink company from being able to lease a spot.

Xinhua did not respond to phone calls and emails seeking comment. The news agency has had a presence in the United States for decades, but has been taking more high-profile steps recently. It moved its headquarters this year from Queens to 1540 Broadway and last year started a 24-hour English-language broadcast.

While there have been instances of Chinese companies taking ad space in the area before, Katz said, the Xinhua sign is the first major-impact ad to go up.

"They're coming here to be a major presence in this country in terms of news," he said.NFL jerseys wholesale from China

"This is representing a chance you will see a lot more of," he said, "Chinese companies branding themselves here."

He said that Samsung, which will share the column with Xinhua, was not nearly the worldwide brand it is now when the company first took a spot on the building in the early 1990s.

"It was a totally different firm,Cheap Christian Louboutin" he said. "They came here to grow."

Katz said the agreement for the space was finalized in recent weeks.
